The Boy Whose Skin Fell Off: Director's Cut

The Boy Whose Skin Fell OffThe first episode of our two-part special The Director’s Cut that tells the stories behind two of the decades most acclaimed and controversial documentaries, the Boy Whose Skin Fell Off and the Dying Rooms.

In a Community Channel exclusive the directors talk frankly about making their films and the effect they had on them, before the documentaries are shown in full.

Jonny Kennedy died in 2003 aged 36. He had a terrible genetic condition called Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) which meant that his skin literally fell off at the slightest touch, leaving his body covered in agonising sores and leading to a final fight against skin cancer.

In his last months Jonny decided to work with filmmaker Patrick Collerton to document his life and death, and the result was a film that is an uplifting, confounding and provocatively humorous story of a singular man. Not shying away from the grim reality of EB, the film was also a celebration of a life lived to the full.

In The Director’s Cut, Channel 4’s Stuart Cosgrove interviews Patrick Collerton who tells his misgivings about taking the project on and the friendship he developed with the film’s subject, Jonny Kennedy.

When it was first shown, The Boy Whose Skin Fell Off captivated nearly 5 million viewers and helped to raise £500,000 for the EB charity DebRA. Community Channel is showing a special appeal on behalf of the Charity directly after the documentary.
